Now, for driving through Mexico with pets, the biggest issue I’ve been told is finding places to stay that accept pets. Check with hotels or motels to see if they allow pets before showing up. Many do take pets, with a small fee. You can find a list of hotels that accept pets here: http://www.petswelcome.com.
Crossing into Mexico, you will need pretty much the same paperwork as you will to cross into Belize: Health certificate (two copies) and Vaccination records (two copies.) A good source of information for traveling with your pets through Mexico can be found here: Bajabound.com or here: Yucatanliving.com *Note: The Yucatan Living link is for driving from Nogales, Arizona to Merrida, Mexico, but since Merrida is only about 5 hours from Chetumal, which is about 7 miles or 12 KM to the Border of Belize at Santa Elena, Quintana Roo, Meixco, I’ve included the link so you will have plenty of references.
You can also get information on “How to Get an International Health Certificate for Pet Travel”. If traveling from Canada, be sure to check with the Mexican Embassy for Canada and for Americans, with the Consulate General of the U.S. for more information. You can also get the information for an Importation Certificate for your pet from SAGARPA-SENASICA.
I’ll cover flying to Belize with your pets in my next post. For now, “Welcome to Belize!”
